Attempt to blow up airliner foiled
ROMULUS, Mich. – A Nigerian man who said he was an agent for al-Qaida tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane Friday as it was preparing to land in Detroit, but travelers who smelled smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers rushed to subdue him, the passengers and federal officials said.

Flight 253 with 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard was about 20 minutes from the airport when passengers heard popping noises, witnesses said. At least one person climbed over others and jumped on the man. Shortly afterward, the suspect was taken to the front of the plane with his pants cut off and his legs burned, a passenger said. Law enforcement officials said the burns indicated the explosive was strapped to his legs.

One U.S. intelligence official said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.

“It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase,” said Peter Smith, a traveler from the Netherlands. “First there was a pop, and then (there) was smoke.”

Smith said a passenger sitting opposite the man climbed over people, went across the aisle and tried to restrain the man. Syed Jafri, another passenger, said he saw a glow and smelled smoke. Then, he said, “a young man behind me jumped on him.”

“Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic,” said Jafri. Smith said the heroic passenger appeared to have been burned.

The White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel. It did not specify what those were.

The incident was reminiscent of Richard Reid, who tried to destroy a trans-Atlantic flight in 2001 with explosives hidden in his shoes, but was subdued by other passengers. Reid is serving a life sentence.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect in Friday’s attempted attack as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab. One law enforcement official said the man claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over U.S. soil, but other law enforcement officials cautioned that such claims could not be verified immediately, and said the man may have been acting independently — inspired but not specifically trained or ordered by terror groups.

All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation was continuing.

Another law enforcement official, also speaking on condition of anonymity in order to discuss the case, said Mutallab’s name had surfaced earlier on at least one U.S. intelligence database, but not to the extent that he was placed on a watch list or a no-fly list.

Mutallab was being questioned Friday evening. An intelligence official said the Nigerian passenger was being held and treated in an Ann Arbor, Mich., hospital. One passenger was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said. She referred all inquiries to the FBI.

The trauma burn center at the hospital said it did not have Abdul Mutallab in its unit.

Flight 253 began in Nigeria and went through Amsterdam en route to Detroit, said Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., the ranking GOP member of the House Homeland Security Committee.

A spokeswoman for police at the Schiphol airport in Amsterdam declined comment about the case or about security procedures at the airport for Flight 253. Schiphol airport, one of Europe’s busiest with a heavy load of transit passengers from Africa and Asia to North America, strictly enforces European security regulations including only allowing small amounts of liquid in hand luggage that must be placed inside clear plastic bags.

A spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Akin Olunkunle, said all passengers and their luggage are screened before boarding international flights. He also said the airport in Lagos cleared a U.S. Transportation Security Administration audit in November.

“We had a pass mark,” spokesman Akin Olukunle said. “We actually are up to standards in all senses.”

There was nothing out of the ordinary about the flight until it was on final approach to Detroit, said Federal Aviation Administration spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory. That is when the pilot declared an emergency, she said. The flight landed at 12:01 p.m. EST, she said.

Delta Air Lines Inc., which bought Northwest last year, said that “upon approach to Detroit, a passenger caused a disturbance.” It said the passenger was subdued immediately and the crew asked that law enforcement officials meet the flight.

“The passenger was taken into custody and questioned by law enforcement authorities,” the airline said.

According to the airline, eight flight attendants and three pilots were on board.

Smith said while he was leaving the plane, he looked at where the man had been sitting and saw a pillow that seemed to have been burned. Melinda Dennis, who was seated in the front row of the plane, said the man involved was brought to the front row and seated near her. She said his legs appeared to be badly burned and his pants were cut off. She said he was taken off the plane handcuffed to a stretcher.

President Barack Obama was notified of the incident and discussed it with security officials, the White House said. It said he is monitoring the situation and receiving regular updates from his vacation spot in Hawaii.

Federal officials said there would be heightened security for both domestic and international flights at airports across the country, but the intensified levels would likely be “layered,” differing from location to location depending on alerts, security concerns and other factors.

Passengers can expect to see heightened screening, more bomb-sniffing dog and officer units and behavioral-detection specialists at some airports, but there will also be unspecified less visible precautions as well, officials said.

The FBI and the Homeland Security Department issued an intelligence note on Nov. 20 about the threat picture for the holiday season, which was obtained by The Associated Press. At the time, officials said they had no specific information about attack plans by al-Qaida or other terrorist groups.

In 2003, al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden purportedly marked Nigeria for liberation in a recording posted on the Internet, calling on Muslims in the oil-rich country to rise up against one of the “regimes who are slaves of America.” But links to al-Qaida remained rare, though security forces claimed to break up such a linked terror cell in November 2007.

Delta, which is days away from obtaining a single operating certificate from the FAA to fully integrate itself and Northwest, has been hosting military personnel who have to travel over the holidays in a lounge at the Detroit airport.

Palm Beach Gardens tennis prodigies Serena and Venus Williams soon will have a stepmom who’s their age.

Dad Richard Williams, 67, is engaged to a 30-year-old woman whom he presented to Page2Live lensman Fred Montana. Montana bumped into them at Sports Authority in West Palm.

“Here, get the first pictures of me and my new wife, said Williams, who manages his daughters’ careers. He introduced the woman as Lakeisha Graham as the two filled the trunk of a Porsche SUV with purchases.

When I called Williams today, he said the two weren’t exactly married yet but were going to be.

We’ll probably do it after the tournament in Key Biscayne (the Sony Ericsson Open, March 25-April 5),Williams said.

But when asked if the sisters approved of his marrying a woman 37 years younger, Williams hung up.

Lakeisha Graham, soon will be Serena and Venus’ stepmom
Williams was divorced from Oracene, 56, the woman with whom he had Serena, 27, and Venus, 28, in 2002.

Three years earlier, Oracene turned up at West Palm Beach’s Columbia Hospital with three broken ribs that nursing staff suspected was the result of domestic violence. Police looked into it but no one was ever charged.

Graham, meanwhile, is listed as the owner of small grocery store near Fort Lauderdale. She’s been living with Williams for a while, since her car registration and her fishing and hunting licenses show Williams’ address, a $750,000 home in Palm Beach Gardens.

How do you feel about Richard Williams’ may-december romance?

Typical Palm Beach, but it’s gross!
It’s true love. More power to them!

The Obama Strategy Is Working |
By ObamaCanada Yesterday at 12:00 pm EST (Updated Yesterday at 12:00 pm EST)
I repost this from the previous blog because of it’s significance. The article below posted by By Keith – “Who Moved My Cheese?” on the previous blog from the link below is important as one will note from my comments below the link.

ISLAMABAD – The Pakistani army has finished its offensive against the Taliban in South Waziristan, but may soon pursue militants in another part of the lawless tribal belt along the Afghan border, the prime minister said Saturday.

**********This is actually exceptional news which offers proof that what I believe to be Obama’s strategy for Afganistan is working faster than originally thought.

It’s unfortunate the writer of this article misses the entire point, which is the Taliban Pakistan was fighting have disengaged and dispersed. These Taliban tribes were paid by Indian and frankly the only way to get them to disengage is if India stopped paying them, which is exactly what Obama asked India to do, along with withdrawing Indian troops from Kashmir, which India announced some 10-12 days ago.(amazing what a state dinner can do isn’t it)

For the most part, this Taliban group is nothing more than mercenaries getting paid for fighting and not really extremist.I believe we will see them drift back to Afghanistan and sooner or later join Afgan forces who will pay them more money than they got paid by India.

This leaves Pakistan the resources to go after the Haqqani network, the group that operates on both sides of the border and is considered a major threat to the U.S. This is the group that harbors Al-Qaeda,likely Ben Laden and needs to be defeated and or totally destroyed. This is also the group that Obama pressed Pakistan to go after, once India had done it’s part.

The plan, imo, is to force the Pakistanis into pressing the Haqqanin Taliban back across the border into Afghanistan, where the additional troops ordered up by Obama will be ready and waiting to annihilate them.

Once this is completed,I expect the next leg of the plan will be to make peace with the rest of the Taliban forces and bribe them to be part of Afgan’s long term security forces versus killing them.

A brilliant strategy by President Obama that appears to be working.Optimistically, this war could be over much sooner than anyone thinks.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Dominicans who went to the polls on Friday had been given chickens, poured beer, promised new homes and even handed cash during a spirited frenzy of campaigning. But President Leonel Fernández won a third term in office largely as a result of a campaign gift to the populace that dwarfed those of his six opponents: a shiny new subway system.

“It’s something for all of us,” said Francia Catalina Peña, 71, who stood outside one of the downtown stations, a glass and granite structure that juts from the ground at an odd angle. Her vote went to the man she calls simply “Leonel.”

Mr. Fernández’s campaign slogan was “Pa’lante,” Dominican slang for onward, and his giant public works project was rushed to completion to allow him to offer free rides before the polling. For a while he even drove the subway train, the first in the Caribbean outside of Puerto Rico.

Opponents said the $710 million used to build the nine-mile subway line, which happens to roll through the struggling neighborhood where Mr. Fernández was born, could have been better spent on the country’s poor.

“All that money that went for this should have gone here,” said Eddie Urenya, 55 and unemployed, rubbing his belly. “It’s nice, but is it needed?”

Perhaps not. But many Dominicans said they saw the project, which still had not opened officially, as a sign of the country’s progress. And in a country where corruption is all too common, others argued that at least the money was not pocketed.

“It’s true that it’s a lot of money, but it’s a project for the people,” said Ramona Hernández, director of the Dominican Studies Institute at the City College of New York.

Mr. Fernández grew up in the Bronx and maintains strong ties there. “Leonel grew up in New York and has a fascination with the place,” said Eduardo Gamarra, a professor at Florida International University in Miami and Mr. Fernández’s longtime friend and campaign consultant. “For him, the Metro is part of that, a way to make this city modern and boost national pride.”

Early returns Friday night showed that Mr. Fernández appeared to have garnered more than 50 percent of the vote and clearly would not need to enter a runoff election. His main opponent conceded late Friday.

Mr. Fernández has been widely credited with steadying a country that he inherited in economic crisis. He was first elected in 1996 and then returned to the presidency in 2004, as banks collapsed, inflation skyrocketed and waves of Dominicans headed to the ocean in boats to seek better lives in the United States.

Mr. Fernández’s chief competitor, Miguel Vargas, an engineer, was public works minister in the last government. The two men battled during the campaign over which of them would drag the Dominican Republic back to its troubled past.

Mr. Fernández, 54, whose Dominican Liberation Party vastly outspent all rivals, sought to link Mr. Vargas with the problem-plagued presidency from 2000 to 2004 of Hipólito Mejía, who left the country near collapse.

And Mr. Vargas, 57, representing the Dominican Revolutionary Party, raised the specter of the last president to win two consecutive terms, Joaquín Balaguer, a strongman who rigged elections, jailed opponents and stuck around for decades, leaving office in 1996.

“We have seen the harm that re-election has done,” Mr. Vargas said at a recent election rally.

Mr. Balaguer’s legacy prompted the country in 1996 to bar sitting presidents from serving again, a law that was changed again in 2002 to allow two consecutive terms.

Mr. Fernández has made no secret of his desire to amend the Constitution to lift term limits altogether, a controversial notion in a country with a history of dictatorship.

Even with his apparent victory, the Dominican Republic faces entrenched problems, despite an economic growth rate that has approached 10 percent in recent years. Global food prices are on the rise, blackouts are still a way of life for much of the capital and unemployment hovers around 15 percent. On top of that, a building boom and a steady influx of tourists have not changed the fact that a quarter of the population lives in poverty.

“Life is hard,” said one of those poor people, Sando Chere, 34, who sells flavored ice on the street and planned to vote for an opposition candidate to stir things up. “None of the politicians, not one of them, really understand that.”
