Kidnapping: Oba of Benin [to] place curses on culprits

The Oba of Benin, Oba Erediawa, worried by the spate of kidnappings, armed robbery and other vices in Benin and other parts of Edo, has directed traditional worshippers to curse those responsible for the crimes.

The traditional worshippers, Enigie, Igie-Ohen, Edionwere and others will gather at Urhokpota Ground in Benin to perform the rituals on June 10 and 12, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

This is just as professional and trade groups as well as residents of the industrial town of Nnewi in Anambra State have asked the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Ogbonna Onovo, to transfer all the policemen serving in Anambra State, to put an end to for kidnapping in the state.

A statement from the Oba‘s palace said the monarch had directed that a meeting should be held between the Iyase of Benin Chief Sam Igbe, and traditional worshippers.

The statement, signed by the Information Officer to the Benin Traditional Council, Mr. Robinson Osayamwem, was made available to NAN on Saturday in Benin.

It said that June 10 would be observed as day of prayers for men while June 12 would be for women.

“The monarch also requested that the Enigie, Igie-Ohen, Edionwere, market women and other traditional worshippers, should come with whatever they have to ensure that the evil doers are wiped away, for peace to reign in the state,” it added.

It said that after the state-wide ceremony to be carried out in Benin on Thursday and Saturday, the traditional worshippers were expected to do same in their various domains.

NAN reports that as a result of the resurgence of kidnapping and murder in Benin and other parts of Edo State in recent times, some groups had protested to the Oba’s Palace to complain.

Juju: Fear Grips Kidnappers, Robbers In Edo- Storm Palace For Forgiveness
« on: June 14, 2010, 05:49 AM »
BENIN—FEAR has gripped armed robbers and kidnappers in Edo State, following the curse placed on evil doers in the state, by the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, as Vanguard was reliably informed that hundreds of them have stormed the Palace of the Oba to plead for forgiveness, so as to escape the wrath of the gods.

Meanwhile, thousands of women from the seven local government areas in Edo South Senatorial District of the state, thronged the traditional Urhokpota ground, weekend, to place curses on those involved in the endless cases of kidnappings, armed robberies and other violent crime in the state.

Vanguard learnt that the alleged criminals, who stormed the Palace to ask for forgiveness have been parading the Palace without getting any answer to their problem. They were, however, advised to change from their ways or die.

Vanguard learnt that they were still scared, whether the curse will affect them since they were yet to receive any assurance of forgiveness. Some bankers who leak information to kidnappers about their customers, have also fled the ancient city for the fear of death.

The women in the kingdom, led by Chief Isekhure, followed suit, weekend. The women dressed in red attires, had several ritual materials, which include dogs, fowls, rams which were slaughtered and their blood splashed on the ground, symbolizing death that was expected to visit those behind the robbery and kidnaping activities in the city.

President, Market Women Association of Nigeria, Madam Amalawa Edebiri, explained that the ceremony was to lay curse on the kidnappers and criminals in the state.

Nor be nigeria?,where low profile criminals are naturally dumber than the high profile ones, the politicians. To a rational mind,it is delusion but to a deluded mind,it is a way of life.

Don’t get me wrong,i have always said that juju oath taking will have more psychological impact on the corrupt officials in nigeria than the bible and koran.Since we are relatively a very primitive society, our believe in ancestoral spirit and their instant wraths have a way of binding the society together and ostracizing the evil ones,

I have once asked a question on culture section of how local nigerian farms that are usually located far away from home are protected from hungry thieves without fence, guards or any form of security whatsoever.

I had the privilege of seeing such things first hand in Arondizuogu in Ideato LGA of IMO state in 1996 when my cousin went there to perform the traditional marriage ceremony (Igba nkwu) of his wife who hails from the town.

When we got there, the single most noticeable thing about the town was that houses and compounds had no fences. I was puzzled and inquired about this. The response was that no one dared steal in that town. People basically went to markets and other places with their doors wide open.

I don’t know whether the same thing still happen today in Arondizuogu. But I know it used to happen.

The same ritual was performed in the late 80s. Few weeks later the notorious Lawrence Anini and his gang were felled.

Some people are born with the traits to become an armed robber. So armed robbers can be born.

Nowa Omoigui: Dr. Ola Kassim and his ilk of let’s pretend we are westernized and civilized Nigerians are IGNORANT! When I was still teaching at OAU, Ile-Ife, there was this elderly man who has a village between Ile-Ife and Ilesha, close to Osu. People would call him a ‘Medicine man’, but he was one of the most knowledgeable men I have ever met in my entire life. Yes, he practiced ‘traditional medicine’ and I used to visit with him and spent hours observing him operate. Even trained medical doctors, my colleagues from the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital used to come to him with complex cases – often involving the psychological and the para-normal that they could not treat – for assistance. And he would invariably help them find a solution. A German female colleague of mine contracted some form of sexual infection while on holiday in Germany to which penicillin or any other known Oyinbo treatment was ineffective. She eventually agreed to visit with Papa, and he found a herbal treatment for her. After her cure, she invited her boyfriend (from she apparently contracted the infection) to Nigeria to undergo the same cure. More than this, teams of senior police officers from Ilesha, Ile-Ife, Oshogbo and Ibadan visited him regularly to seek his assistance in cracking tough criminal cases they could not crack, especially cases involving murder. Again as usual, I am talking from PERSONAL EXPERIENCE – from things that I personally witnessed. On a more personal level, when my wife was only a week or two pregnant with our first child, when she herself was not even sure, and neither her gynecologist nor a medical doctor friend could yet tell for sure, we paid Papa a social visit. He took only one look at my wife, and told her she had taken in. Even my wife was shocked! Then he went on to tell her she would was likely to have some problems just before delivery of the baby, to which of course we did not pay any attention. And he went on to tell her what to do, should in case that happened. My wife had a very easy pregnancy, and she went to her ante-natal clinics with religious regularity, being her first baby, clinics held by my colleagues and friends who saw and who anticipated no problems whatsoever! She has a natural physique that should not have any complications with pregnancy or child bearing. But low and behold, after her contractions set in, complications developed and even my very experienced colleagues almost panicked, because they were about to loose her and the baby! Then she remembered what the Papa had told her, and she told that to her doctors under excruciating pains that even Valium could no longer suppress. One of the attending doctors already had dealings with Papa, and so they followed his instructions to avert a major tragedy. My mother in-law arrived from Awka the evening after the child was delivered, and she confirmed what the Papa had said, and added that had she been there when her daughter went into labor, she too would have known what to do even before the complications set in! It was something that ran in the family, she explained! My son and wife are alive today, thanks to an illiterate old medicine man who foresaw what modern medicine could not detect or anticipate, almost 81/2 months earlier! These are TRUE INCIDENTS – not theories or speculations manufactured in the Canadian tundra! We Africans have a way to underestimate the KNOWLEDGE of our ancestors, and dismiss them as “primitive superstitions”, to our own great loss! Rather than be humble and admit our IGNORANCE, we want to pretend to KNOW ALL! Some visiting Americans who came to the OAUTHC called on Papa, and proposed taking him to the US for a couple of months to study him. He refused, saying he was too old to travel to the White Man’s land. And besides, he spoke no English – not even standard Yoruba! His son always had to translate whatever he said into the kind of Yoruba we all could understand! In addition, truly KNOWLEDGEABLE MEDICINE MEN or BABALAWO never operate outside their natural habitat. There are imperceptible vibes they believe they can feel only there, and nowhere else. He taught me that too! Ola Kassim is a POMPOUS OPINIONATED IGNORANT FOOL! Quote me! Dr. Valentine Ojo Tall Timbers, MD On Sat 06/12/10 9:46 PM , Nowa Omoigui nowa_o@yahoo.com sent: Ola The basic truth is that conventional methods have failed. The state has failed. The economy of Edo State was slowly being destroyed and even indigenes got to a point where they were afraid of going to visit the land of their ancestors. The situation was intolerable, and the government helpless. We had to look deep into our institutional memory to address the emergency. It is not for nothing that the entire State Medical Association cried out for unconventional measures. You are no more modern or western educated that they are. This matter is not complicated. You try deploying the scientific non-archaic methods you are celebrating to Nigeria and lets see how they work to bring the scourge of kidnapping under control. This is not the first time in Nigeria that traditional methods have been used as a supplement against crime. A lot of criminals in Nigeria are heavily invested in occultic activities and have networks of protector medicine men and evil forests. As the Americans say, you do not take a knife to a gunfight. The pH of the medium in which they operate had to be altered. That is what the Oba of Benin has done by exercising his authority and power in many more ways than you can ever imagine. Nigeria is a superstitious society. In that set up, psychological operations go a long way. In spite of their false hypocritical claims, most Nigerians do not fear the Bible or the Koran and you can make them take all kinds of oaths on those documents/books without fear of consequence. They can take oaths of office today and begin stealing tomorrow. But have them swear traditionally on Ifa, or Ogun, or Ayelala, or Yasin etc… and watch them self regulate their behavior. Perhaps you have forgotten, but Lawrence Anini was caught and his criminal reign brought to an end during the IBB era using complex methods to assist the Police. IBB was using regular Police methods until Anini announced on the BBC that he was in charge of Bendel while IBB was only in charge of the other 18 states (at that time). In order to mobilize the traditional system, then DIG Parry Osayande (a member of the Royal family) was specifically charged from Force HQ Lagos (along with a joint Police-Army team) with the Anini operation. The team was joined by a traditional team designated by the Palace which was actively involved in planning operations, special weapons and tactics, right down to which of his legs should be shot first to immobilize him. It was not for nothing that his left leg was practically destroyed by the Police and his self confidence destroyed along with it – a phenomenon that manifested itself in the court room. He was later executed disabled. Right up to the time of his execution Iyamu the Policeman (Anini’s ally and weapons supplier) was making frantic efforts to use his links in secret societies to subvert justice right up to the top in Lagos. He had to be fought at that level. The traditional system is hardly ever credited for such things because they do not run around beating their chests. If he is in the mood, perhaps ex-IG Adewusi can also tell you how far among traditional operatives the Police went in Lagos and the West to bring Ishola Oyenusi to book. Just spend some time with experienced retired Policemen and Forensic experts and you will realize that Nigeria is not as it seems. Even in the US, paranormal phenomena have been mobilized by the CIA (abroad) and FBI (domestically) for crime fighting. In Nazi Germany, there were entire divisions of the Nazi party invested in the occult. There are books on the subject. We can blow grammar all we want, but steps had to be taken in Edoland and they have. So lets sit back and watch the play. The taste of the pudding is in the eating!

Edo secret cult leaders promise to end killings
    By Osagie Otabor 28/06/2010 01:30:00

Barely one month after criminals and kidnappers were cursed by traditional worshippers in Benin City, the Edo State capital, secret cult leaders have pledged to stop cult-related killings.

The cult leaders were said to have met with the Benin monarch, Oba Erediauwa, last week where they promised to stop killing of young cult members.

Cult-related killings have claimed many lives in the past.

A source said the cult leaders told the monarch that their resolve to stop killings, especially young ones, was as a result of several meetings among themselves.

The source said the monarch urged the secret cult leaders to end the rampant cult related killings and work towards developing the state.

Oba Erediauwa has hailed the decision of President Goodluck Jonathan to pay military pensioners their entitlements.

He made the commendation while receiving the Head of Service of the Federation, Mr. Steve Oronsanye.

The monarch said the payment of military pensioners attest to the fact that President Jonathan was sensitive to the plight of the people.

He urged Oronsanye to be a good ambassador of the Benins at all levels.
Oronsanye said his visit to the state was the first since he was appointed and promised to do his best at the federal level.

Edo Traditionalists Again Rain Curse On Kidnappers
Written by Patrick Ochoga, Benin City
    Sunday, 13 June 2010 20:16

For the second time in two days, traditionalists in Edo gathered to place a curse on kidnappers and criminals that are disturbing the peace in Benin City and other parts of the state.

The Saturday’s ceremony, like the one held on Thursday, took place at the ancient Urkpokpota Hall, King’s Square, Benin City.

Directive to traditional worshippers – Enigies, Igie-Ohen and Edionweres – to curse the criminals was given by the Benin Monarch, Oba Erediauwa.

The event was specifically for women as their male counterpart held one on Thursday.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chief Priest of Benin Kingdom, Nosakhare Isekhure, said the curse was the last resort.

Isekhure said security agencies had failed in their responsibilities, noting that it appeared they had no answers to crime.

The chief priest said the traditionalists had no other alternative than to invoke the spirits of the gods to deal with the criminals.

Mrs. Josephine Omoregie, Secretary, Edo Market Association, said the women were in support of the curse, adding that they wanted peace to reign in the state.

She noted that Edo used to be known as a peaceful place years back, saying they wanted that situation to continue.

Goats and fowl were slaughtered as sacrifice at the ceremony.

Bini monarch, chiefs curse kidnappers, robbers

BENIN—THE Bini monarch, Oba Erediauwa, yesterday, rained curses on kidnappers, armed robbers and people involved in other violent crime in the state, with his chiefs, led by the Iyase (Prime Minister) of Benin Kingdom, Chief Sam Igbe, the Isekhure of Benin Kingdom (Chief Priest of the Kingdom), Chief Nosakhare Isekhure, going round the streets of Benin, proclaiming and laying curses on evil doers in the society.

The Oba, who expressed worry over the persistent cases of kidnappings, assassinations and armed robberies, which the police in the state seemed incapable of checking, had last week ordered all the chief priests, witch doctors and herbalists to come out yesterday with a view to laying curses on the perpetrators of evil in the state.

However, the event which took place at the traditional Urhokpota Hall, Kings Square, was quite scaring, as thousands of traditional worshippers, dressed in red and armed with large slaughtered animals and charms, went round the major roads and streets in the city, laying curses on criminals in the society.

The event paralysed activities in the ancient city for over seven hours.

According to the Chief Priest of the Kingdom, Chief Isekhure, “as Edo people, we are traditionalists. We believe in God through our ancestors. In order to put a stop to all the cases of insecurity in our area, we had to put a curse by inviting the ancestors to destroy all those involved in these dastardly acts, so that at the end of the day, there will be calm in our society.

“We want peace but you know that those who want peace must be prepared for war. We have not done this kind of thing in the past 40 years. The Oba had instructed that in order for peace to reign here, we must mobilize the most effective tools within our capability and that is to put a curse on all those who are behind kidnappings in the state.”

“To all those bankers, who give information to kidnappers about how much a customer has in his account, they are also cursed.

“Even landlords, who knows that their tenants are armed robbers, kidnappers and they accommodate them, all of them will perish. It is unfortunate. We have to do this today (yesterday). We have no choice. Those who refuse to change will perish because the wages of sin is death,” he said.

Commenting also, the Iyase of Benin, Chief Igbe, lamented “our young men, who will be leaders of tomorrow are all dying due to the activities of these evil men. So the Oba is fed up of all these. This is the way we react to these kind of things in the past. So the Oba has gone back to ask the ancestors to help us clear these people in our society.

“This kind of action did not just start today. That is the way we dealt with such situations in the past
and we have gone back to it, so as to stop this wickedness. These people are punishing us. So when our father the Oba decided that we handle it this way, we were happy with it, ” he said.

I hope the Monarch and other elders will remember to curse all those that have stolen the future of the Nigerians unborn by squandering govt’s money?
They should dedicate a day to curse all the people that have stolen unrepentantly and wish to steal from the government’s coffer.

How I wish it’s not all “shakara” that will produce no result. The rituals made at that time to fish out those that killed Dele Giwa has yet to produce the culprits up to now. Honestly, I wish this current one will be successful. And after it has been successful, the “technology” should be lent to other parts of the country to apply as well.

I wonder, however, why the treasury looters were not included in the curse ritual. It should have started from them, as the treasury looters form the genesis of almost all other crimes in Nigeria. Hope you know why.

Perhaps even the psychological side of the curse will deter some of the still faint-hearted among the miscreants, but unfortunately most of them believe in nothing and care nothing for anything except temporary enjoyment. Besides curses have such funny asides. The Curser has to be clean as a whistle. If not, it usually had the opposite effect. This is true of most cultures, but though I lived in Benin City for one year, I did not learn much. So it may be different there. I just pray it works because whether it works or it does not, there are balloon effects. If it works others will fear curses all over the nation. AND if it does not, it will remove the fear of all other cultural/traditional instruments used to scare those that are scared of such instruments.

Juju: Fear Grips Kidnappers, Robbers In Edo- Storm Palace For Forgiveness

This is good news and may they be more scared. Abia should follow suit, and indeed anywhere where such a problem persists.

Traditional ruler places curse on kidnappers

The fight against kidnapping and other related crimes took a new dimension in Benin, the Edo State capital on Thursday, as traditional priests, herbalists and traditional worshippers gathered at the King’s Square to invoke curses on kidnappers and other perpetrators of evil acts in the state.

This was at the instance of the Benin traditional ruler, Oba Erediauwa, who directed that curses be placed on all those involved one way or the other in any form of criminality in Edo State, as a way of cleansing the society. The Oba had recently offered to tackle the menace of social vices in the city through traditional means.

About 60 traditional worshippers gathered at the King’s Square where they made sacrifices of animals and poured libation over the animals before placing curses on the kidnappers and other criminals in the land.

The Chief Priest of Benin Kingdom, Nosakhare Isekhure, said the purpose was to ensure that peace reigns in the land.

“The country has been unstable for some time now as a result of kidnapping and violent robberies,” he said. “The Benin people are traditionally not Christians. We are traditionalists. In order to put a stop to the state of insecurity, we just have to place a curse on them to stop all these activities that threaten lives and property in Edo State so that there will be peace. Besides, those who want peace must prepare for war. The Oba has said that for peace to reign, we must mobilize the most effective tool.”

The Iyase of Benin, Sam Igbe was optimistic that the action of the traditional worshippers would deter criminals from their evil ways and put an end to kidnapping that has almost become a daily affair in the land. “We shall wait and see, but we hope it will put an end to it (kidnapping). But if they don’t fear themselves, they probably would be sorry for themselves,” he said.

    Seeking legal support

He said efforts were been made to give the action of the traditionalists a legal backing, as “we are trying to liaise with the state House of Assembly and the Commissioner for Justice”.

Mr Igbe advised the people to give useful information about kidnappers and other criminals to the law enforcement officers because “police are not magicians; they cannot perform without adequate information”.

The chairman of Oredo Local Government Area, Omorogieva Gbajumo, welcomed the development and described it as an added measure to the efforts of the police in stamping out criminality from the land.

He told the press that the act was to ensure that peace and tranquillity reign in the land and also called on both the Christian and Muslim bodies to organize their own prayers against the evil acts.

Traditional denominations like the Asigidi, Ayelala, Osokpekan and others participated in the exercise which took them round some major streets in Benin.
