As a Southern whose roots extends to the  Appalachian region of West Virginia, North Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, I spent the early years of my youth embracing the musical cultures of both the Blues and Hillbilly music. Each genre arose from the same social/economic conditions of oppression and hardship. They are two sides of the same cultural coin. At last, people’s consciousness of this history is taking root. Instead of attacking each other as victims, we are beginning to address the source of our oppression and discontent.
