LYNCHING IN AMERIKKKA! -ORIGIN OF THE WORD PICNIC IS “PICK A NIGGER”

Here is another little known Black History Fact. This information is in the African American Archives at the Smithsonian Institute. Although not taught in American learning institutions and literature, it is in most Black history professional circles and literature that the origin of the term: ‘picnic’ derives from the acts of lynching African-Americans.
The word: ‘picnic’ is rooted from the whole theme of: ‘Pick A Nigger’.
This is where individuals would: ‘pic’ a Black person to lynch… and make this into: a family gathering…. There would be music and a: ‘picnic’. (‘Nic’ being the white acronym for: ‘nigger’). Scenes of this were in the movie Rosewood. The black producers and writers should have chosen to use the word ‘barbecue’ or ‘outing’ instead of the word ‘picnic’.
To attempt to tie lynchings to family outings, where food was served, is to misunderstand the real nature of these events. Rather, they were outbreaks of mass white hysteria, and attempts by groups of Whites to terrorize and brutalize the entire Black communities where they occurred.
Often, they were motivated by alleged acts of violence by Blacks against Whites, alleged disrespect and other breaches of Southern racial ‘etiquette’, and on many occasions, victims were chosen at random. Although women and children were frequently present, it is more accurate to view these events as collective psychotic behavior, rather than family outings. Lynching had become a ritual of interracial social control and recreation rather than simply a punishment for crime.

  1. Vonda Says:

I thought that it was important that I let you know that this article is not true. I am a black woman and have research the etymology of this word and even checked your sources and found no proof of this claim. I went as far as speaking to my grandparents about this and they have never heard of the word being used in this manner. This is not to start a riot but rather to keep us factually informed.

  2. Colin Says:

Vonda is right, where on earth did you do your research?
Picnic is originally a French word, picque-nique and has nothing whatsoever to do with lynching, it has always been about eating al fresco, anyway, good luck with that one.

    • Daniel Moshe Johnson Says:

Interesting, yes, it’s French term, but it was used in a derogatory way as a moray and culturally lingo by ignorant light pigmented specimens, so don’t try to retract from how this French term, like many other terms were twisted and attributed to other meanings.

It’s like you are ignoring and doubting it’s implemented conatation, as though dark pigment descendants and some of the olde timers still around heard it used in that way.

I surprised you haven’t condemned the slurs and outright ignorance that presence in this blog from your white pigmented counter parts, who are descendants of the very Wilie Lynch disciple program we are talking about.

Why are you and your likeminded commenters are not condemning the degenerate comments regarding this blog, because you are in solidarity fully, and deep down you cheer and stand idle like many of your ancestors did.

“Nothing from nothing leaves nothing, you got to have something, if you want to be with me”

      • Andrew B Says:

It’s a Billy Preston song.. I’m not quite sure why you have chosen to quote God as to attributing this saying “Nothing from nothing leaves nothing, you got to have something vif you want to be with me” … Are you an idiot?

  3. hack Says:

Although picque-nique is of French origin, in White American history the word was changed from it’s original use to pic-nic to represent a painful gathering to pick a BLACK person to lynch or sale on the block. Look at the pictures of lynching…..a large social gathering of men, women, and children eating and observing the events. Obviously we know that was not the origin of the word, but that does not change what history dictates. The constitution said all men are created equal, but at that time Blacks were not included as men…they were property. I guess the origin of the word equal changed too.

    • Davetta L Wilson Says:

It is a hoax..yes, Lynchings were often “picnic-like settings” where women and children were present and food was served, that is not what the term meant…the two things simply coincided with each other. http://www.ferris.edu/jimcrow/question/jan04.htm

    • Wat Ever Real Says:

So you admit that picnic does not mean what this website says it means? Thanks for clearing that up. This is not about whether lynching took place or not. It is about the origin of the word itself.

      • Daniel Moshe Johnson Says:

Indeed, but, let us not reduce the article to the origin of the term, what I see in the opposites comments is denial, reduction and avoidance, and this is where articles like this exposes the degradation of a society, when the participation of the citizens don’t want to own up to class ignorance.

I say class, because race applies to a competition, well the world structure does resemble this now, and the term “nigga” can socially be applied to any human specimen.

If we observe savings and loans scandals, GM, the Reserve, Wall Street and investment bankers, we can say that the monopoly on capitol, is niggardly behaviour. The Torah alludes to one’s action can be termed as acting “niggardly within” or stingy.

This is a dark history by dark evil and mislead people, who dominant class of ignorant racist, subjected others whom I truly believe were good people within, but went along with there neighbors to preserve the life, family and social appearance they had.

      • Michael Moffett Says:

That is a Damn lie wat ever real says the word picnic means exactally what the website says it means, there are several words from long ago that have different meanings from over seas to america, I know for fact this is true as of picnic, I had a white friend back in the early 70’s who had grand parents that could not cope with the fact that we as black were now having rites and they could not control us as they they once did I heard this out of his own mouth “We should have us a good ole fashioned picnic that would put them niggers back in their place” I ask My white friend what did he mean and he explained to me what it meant of the old days picnics as it was explained to him, so what I am saying is that whites in America had their own meaning of the word picnic and it was pick a nigger.

    • Andrew B Says:

Obviously the original author of this article DID not know the origins of the term pique – nique. And while this term may have been butchered by (the only demographic characters I love to hate more than the typical Malcolm X new-agers) Ignorant southern fools. The original poster was quoted to actually believe the word to be derived from this.

Rather than waste folks time on this twaddle you should be looking at why the Rockerfella’s and Duponts were funding these right wing groups etc and bolstering them up with vast amounts of money, what was their reason?

    and just for the record..
I am a white englishman, my family has a given surname, given to them by their slave masters because to work you needed a surname and my ancestors didnt have one or the one they had wasnt suitable for the gentry of England , hence I can only trace my family back 300 years so far..

I do realise that USA history is very different from ours here in the UK and some very different tactics have been used to control the masses in both countries, in the UK things are done very quietly and sneakily so nobody notices and as well as the sneaky political manouvering, it would appear that the more obvious shock and awe idea has been used on the American people for some time now to ruin the spirit of the people.

I would urge you to read about the State murder of my beautiful brother man Dr. Martin Luther King, the info was obtained by the very hard working lawyer William Pepper, this is his book on the subject http://www.versobooks.com/books/313-313-an-act-of-state

this goes some way in explaining how nasty our leaders were and are still today and how far they will go to enforce their will on us.

  9. Mel Renfro Says:

I just find it silly that the author made a point of specifically stating “…other breaches of Southern racial ‘etiquette…'” when only one of those states was below the Mason Dixon line. I wonder when we ever get the facts straight that before 1980s, and if you REALLY want to be realistic and technical, the 1990s (even so far as to CA, in the more rural central areas), black racial violence was oft found all over the continental U.S.; from the Bronx to San Clemente….

  10. MeganMae Says:

This is wrong, and not right I feel like I should be ashamed to hang out with my black friends beacuse of what my ansisters did to thiers just because the color of their skin.!

  11. Daniel Moshe Johnson Says:

Megan Mae, it’s okay , all whites were not involved in these demonic acts, so don’t feel connected to it, and remember, all blacks in the South and North were not subject to this treatment. Many dark people, like my family members from Louisiana, exercised there rights to bare arms, as it was there rights to protect there farmland (property), family and possessions.

So like our democratic sovereigns are backed up by machine guns, nukes and bombs, there is a need to keep fighting against the forces that wish to abolish this right. If many blacks had bared arms, had courage, had organization, had education and Chutzpah, in those days, stories would have been somewhat different.

Take for instance the Holocaust, where many nations stood by, even the US, whom today send out convoys if something smells fishy, did nothing as the Nazi’s progressed. And even today, holocaust survivors, many in there twilight, have to endure the very thought of anti-semetism, and a neo-nazi skin head ideology still thriving world-wide in this day.

So don’t feel guilty my friend, just remember that discrimination of any kind will continue, until free thinkers take back there mind, and realize that the true purpose of life, is not to look forward to the grave, but to realize that the gift of life is to switch to the right.

  13. White and Proud Says:

Well it’s niggers like this that give a bad name to the rest of them. An obvious article to generate black pride.

    • Daniel Moshe Johnson Says:

Everyone needs to lose the term, the way it’s being thrown around by what it seems to be progenitors of the nuse man, the Klan, need to be brought up.
The very known existence of the organization is a mockery to any court system, judicial process and law enforcement department in the US.

The Klan in it’s existence NOW, should have all its members and associations brought up on murder charges, as we look at the history of this era, justice is long overdue, and as your comments reflect, there is no remorse, apologies etc…

What does this mean, it means that evil will be revisited on nations and individuals who transgressed by using evil as there conscious. The forecast is SHARIA LAW, if this sickness of race does not end, the entire globe will be vacuumed by an ideology, where pigment variations, is not a stumbling block.

I’m French and I live in Nantes a French harbourg from which boats were starting for slave trade. Three months ago a memorial against esclavagism opened in the city.
I can definetely says that “pick a nigger” is an hoax. Pique-nique is a French word: “Piquer” in old French language (XIIIth century) means to hold and “nique” means an instant. So in the XVIIIth century “pique-niquer” is to have a quick lunch not only on the grass.

  17. Sam Says:

A friend of mine, employed by the local school system, for 33 years, almost lost his job and brought up on Federal charges last week because of the word picnicker. Apparently, a black woman asked him where he was delivering some stuff, and he replied they were dropping it off to some picnickers and she got offended by the term…. He had no clue about this, until they brought him to the supervisors office to investigate it. Have we really come that far in society, to have a man fired and arrested over a word like that?

  18. JJ Says:

This issue recently surfaced at a religious setting. I researched it and found it to be derived from once again a vicious hoax. As long as hatred, ignorance and intolerance brews in our lives…this will never end. Judge a person by their character and the let the past go…it’s spilt milk! We do not respect each other so how can we respect a person of a different race. I saw better race relations in SC than on the West Coast…that is a shame since the civil war started there…that says a lot about people’s ability to move on and do better… it’s so easy to hate… that’s what’s wrong with the world. Wake up everybody!!

  20. J. D. Hunter Says:

    Simply not true.
‘Picnic’ began life as a 17th-century French word — it wasn’t even close to being an American invention. A 1692 edition of Origines de la Langue Françoise de Ménage mentions ‘piquenique’ as being of recent origin and marks the first appearance of the word in print. As for how the French came by this new term, it was likely
invented by joining the common form of the verb ‘piquer’ (meaning “to pick” or “peck”) and a nonsense rhyming syllable coined to fit the first half of this new palate-pleaser.

The first documented appearance of the term outside the French language occurred in 1748, but it was 1800 or thereabouts before anyone can prove it made it into the English language. Even then the word still wasn’t being used in America, but in England.

  22. Sid Says:

This is my first ever responding to internet blog or comment there are a few things we all need to consider. There are some good and bad in all people. Now in America the usage of slang words are part of our society. What might mean one to you might something different to me. America is a multicultural country again what means to one race could means something different to another race.

Since slang word are used picnic could mean that in America! A picnic could mean having lunch with one family but also means we are going to have lynching for entertainment. No one really know the full meaning in America anything is possible. It is possible that whites could use picnic slang for the very purpose of this discussion. Either way we all need to get over it and do better.!!!

Here are some questions. Did the holocaust happened? Did the Mississippi Burning take place? Was the story of Medgar Evers true? Was the Civil Right Movement a hoax? Was lynching, terrorizing and burning crosses form of control and fear for all blacks in the south? Did formal governor Wallace stand the doors of the University of Alabama in June 11,1963?

Was the Syphilis Study in Tuskegee, Alabama (1932-1972) fair to black males? In fact, black males in Alabama had to be tested for Syphilis when they were born and given Syphilis shots till age 12 I think. I was given another test before I was marriage in 1992 it was called a blood test. Why? I was born in 1964.The government love to try to cover up things when it comes to blacks.

In order to know the answers we need to know the history of the south. It true all southern states have some very bad history. There things that have happened upon blacks the media will never allow the world to know.If the whole truth was told how blacks were really treated we all would vomit!!!

It is only fair to say if it were not for some of those wonderful and kindhearted whites that some of our ancestors had encountered we would not be here today. I am very grateful to those whom helped many blacks as they could that is part of our history as well.

I hate all those things took place and history do not need to repeat itself. America has a very bad history. We need let go of the hatred, the violence, discrimination, racism, and the stereotyping. We all are flesh and blood. No race is better than the next we all breathe God’s air and feel His sunrise. We all need the Blood of Jesus Christ to become sanctified!!!!

Even if a few whites bothered to use the term as mentioned (which in itself is a dubious claim, given the paucity of evidence stated in the report), there is NO WAY that the term derived from the practice. It’s a HOAX, people, no matter how much anyone wants you to believe it. If we are going to ban picnics or the mention of them in society because someone once used the term associated with the despicable acts of the times, then we should stop serving “crackers” with cheese at our parties as well since we have actual, contemporary evidence that crackers are associated with hate crimes. And while we’re at it, we should ban cigarettes (after all a fag was originally a cig) and … well … we ought to just plain ban eating, since I’m more certain that a lynching was discussed over some dinner at some point in history than I am that it was EVER associated with a picnic.

Let’s just build ourselves a collective bridge and get over it!

  26. Black African Americans Are Still Slaves-Willie Lynch | It's Still Time To Stop Blaming The White Man Says:

[…] The above pictures are indicative of White Christian Americans having a good time by lynching  Black African Americans.   The word “lynching” is derived from “Willie Lynch.”  For whatever reason, White folks  would decide to lynch any Black African American male, although they have lynched Black African American females on many occasions. So they would drink their liquid courage and get drunk then make plans to go out and “pick a nigger” to lynch. Several counties and hundreds, if not thousands of White Americans would turn out for these gala events. Food and beverages would be sold and good Christian White folks would even cut off the body parts of their victims, placing them in jars for souvenirs of their joyous outing. Read “100 Years of Lynchings” by Ralph Ginzberg.  The phrase “pick a nigger” was shortened and cloaked in merriment. Thus, we now have the word “picnic.” […]

  27. Me Says:

White America has still not owned up to it’s genocide of native and black peoples,
With Black people you name whites have done it and Black people are far overdue reparations,
First slavery ,free labour for hundreds of years, along with brutalization ,rape and murder,.after slavery your services are no longer needed so now we are going to imprison you at an alarming rate, and at the same time have you work to death this went on till the 1940’s blacks are still over represented in prisons.
Lynching ,killing mainly black males for simply not tipping a hat ,southern etiquette for years ,the official tally of blacks lynched is maybe 5000′ but counting by the NAACP didn’t start until after the turn of the century ,so the number is likely to be much much higher, after slavery was abolished 1865 ,
Jim crow laws allowed every day white folk to kill blacks at will and get away with it.
Whites administered syphilis to black people as part of a government program this went on from the 1930s to early 1970s.
Government programs studied and acted upon phasing out black people , through a practice called eugenics , popularized by the Nazis to create one race the white race.,.The government sterilization of both black and native women so the could not have babies , finally abortion is legalized and now programs like planned parent hood market the over shelling number of black women to have abortions ,
All of this and more by the American government over the years
To now kill black people ,
And now unfortunately young black males kill themselves at the delight of white supremist system,
Jews have been compensated for the holocaust , but the same thing has happened in Ameica

  31. Mamajuju Says:

I am so glad that we are all able to discuss this issue and learn a little history. My mom had a book (that was burnt in a fire in our home) that explained and chronicled the hate and disrespect blacks endured. She told us we were better than that and to never fear evil. I thought I’d never see the pic of the man being burnt alive with onlookers going about like they were seeing a live action movie again but seeing it brings me back to my teenage years when she showed me the book. This pic has been burned into my memory for as long as I can remember. It’s a shame that races can condone this behavior. I would never need to do something this despicable to prove my dominance over another people. There are also musical ice cream truck jingles that originated in the guise of “niggers loving water melon and ice cream”. I refuse to eat from trucks that emanate that song even though the meaning of the song has long been forgotten. I try to visit Black History museums and read books on the love-hate relationship between whites and blacks through the years. We have to open our eyes, believe, forgive and make sure it never happens again…

Well said, unfortunately, this illusion of pigment shades has plagued this planet for quite sometime, there must be a stem factor, and there is.

That stem factor is so deep, that it correlates to the devine nature of Gods spirit in man and the evil free willed spirit of mankind.

One was ordered after the order of the former or original, earlier and latter. The latter heaven seen and experienced by humanity is currently under the order of fallen entities. Whom the light of truth has been hidden from, but available to those on the path to truth, who is knowledge or “chokmat” in Hebrew and understanding ” binah”.

The mystery of the Most High is a phenomenon to the mortal mind set, so humanity as a whole has failed to represent. One thing is certain, the temporal mode is a developmental one, where the most important aspect of the classroom is the last on the world agenda, so the resistors of the light who continually hold sway, keep you blind by posing off human costumes, as an important mental contemplation to draw upon.

Do you intend to lynch my comment and freedoms. God was invoked as the author, because at the end of the day, everything in the material mode belongs to no one except he who spoke it into existence. Billy Preston was possibly refering to a material scenario involving a man to woman situation involving material possessions, by invoking the design artificer of all creation, whom in Hebrew we call Hashem, was relative to scripture, ” having something” pertains to good deed ” mitzvah in Hebrew, loving kindness, chesed in Hebrew, wisdom, chokmat in Hebrew, understanding, b inah in Hebrew, and spiritual gifts, Tuesday, which is very obvious to me, you lack any of these. Yes, the frivolity and utter disregard for Black lives displayed during lynchings is disgusting. (my opinion) But no, the word picnic does not originate from “pick-a-nigger”. (FACT) The word picnic originated not in the US, but in France, and the original French word had nothing to do with lynching. (FACT) See the difference between opinion and fact? Choosing to believe a false statement does not make it true. We need to know our history, but spreading untruths does not help.

The word picnic did not begin with the lynching of black Americans; however, the lynching of blacks often occurred in picnic-like settings.

  42. gneeva Says:

Mid 18th century: from French pique-nique, of unknown origin. It was bastardized by white lunch mobs who not only brought picnics to these public events, but in some places sold ice cream and cool drinks. There were even photos taken with the dead, often castrated and/or raped victims which were later turned into postcards providing us with historical documents of these heinous acts. Vivid descriptions are given in a couple of novels on Amazon Kindle I have personal connection with: Out of Ashes by Sutton L. Avery (I was one of the editors) which has very detailed descriptions of these acts of violence and has been written as a screenplay (I helped edit it, too) and They Just Be Killing White Folks by VaJo PaJefChat (a pen name), a vampire novel set in Central Texas, my birthplace, where lynchings were routine; in this tale of the undead th racists turned into vampires only kill white people. I’m the author. There are many other vivid literary and film descriptions and depictions of lynchings and the festivities surrounding them that included picnics, the setting for my short play, “Lynching Michael Vick.” I wrote it in response to the cries that he should be lynched for ordering that a dog he owned be put to death. This is one of several short plays in my tongue-in-cheek tribute to and send-up of Tyler Perry, “Ain’t No Chiltluns on Broadway.”

My mother often used the word Nick or NIC to refer to blacks. I walked up and heard two young white boys calling my three year old nephew Nicky. Controlled anger informed them that us not his name and not to call hi. That anymore.

  45. Jerrell Says:

Articles like this making black people look stupid. There are absolutely no references here to the word ever being used and references I’ve seen elsewhere (such as W.E.B. DuBois) have been a dead end… Yes, words and origins can change but the word ‘picnic’ never changed back in the 20s, it only changed with dumb rumours on the internet..

  46. Katrina Says:

Sorry, but that’s a good try, inaccurate however. The term “picknic” was used in France as early as 1692 “pique-Miquelon” Here if refers to describe a group of people dining in an establishment who brought their own wine. It enters English around 1700 and appears in 1748 from the old English dictionary. There is more but you can check the origin for yourself. Racist who lynched African people for amusement probably used the term “pick a nigger” and saw the sick humor on the word play, but that is NOT the origin of the term. Racist dog munchers probably just used it that way.

  48. Ela Says:

Wherever this word originated is unimportant. What matters is how the word came to be associated with the diabolical act of white racists making a public spectacle out of murdering and torturing a black person. Their depraved racist pathology even compelled them to bring their offspring to these events so they could pass on their sick blood lust to the next generation. These creatures are dangerous.

I think this article, this part of history should be brought into the light so that everyone can be made aware because these things are part of the root of racism which is evil in and of itself. Nice article!

  58. w1sewunn Says:

This is 100% FALSE. You can not find this fictional B.S. at the Smithsonian. Delete this race baiting post. READING CAN SERIOUSLY DAMAGE YOUR IGNORANCE. The word comes from the French word pique-nique, whose earliest usage in print is in the 1692 edition of Tony Willis, Origines de la Langue Française, which mentions pique-niqueas being of recent origin. The term was used to describe a group of people dining in a restaurant who brought their own wine. The concept of a picnic long retained the connotation of a meal to which everyone contributed something. According to some dictionaries, the French word pique-nique is based on the verb piquer, which means ‘pick’, ‘peck’, or ‘nab’, and the rhyming addition nique, which means ‘thing of little importance’, ‘bagatelle’, ‘trifle’.

On a different note..when will we get our 40 acres and a mule? This country was built on the backs of African slaves(so called African Americans) a whole other conversation; However, EVERYONE that has come to OUR country has been given some type of restituition(eg tax exemptions, communities of their own, etc.) What’s MORE DISTURBING is that they ALL were set up in Black neighborhoods(obviously by design) our neighborhood stores were closed and replaced with liquor stores gas stations that sell EVERYTHING from CRACK PIPES to cookies and EVERYTHING in between…again by design to KEEP US OPRESSED!! If only BLACKS could come together and STOP CONCEEDING to the DEMON of OPPRESSION and FREE OUR MINDS by REALIZING that WE ARE KINGS and QUEENS as well as the CHOSEN PEOPLE and STOP DESIRING and ADMIRING the AMERICAN DREAM and do US according to OUR HERITAGE(Honorable PROUD Strong and most of all PEACEFUL HUMBLE and God fearing) we would be better off PHYSICALLY and MENTALLY!! The American Dream is NOT for us and we will NEVER OBTAIN IT no matter how hard we try. TRUTH IS …ITS A DISTRACTION they use to KEEP us IGNORANT to who we TRULY ARE! They KNOW and UNDERSTAND who we are MORE than MOST of do!! Brothers and Sisters we are going through life with our eyes wide shut…WAKE UP!!
